The sun used to be worshipped by ancient cultures and even today in regions that experience long periods of no sun or cloudy weather, you will find a kind of unofficial sun worship.  People aren’t the only things that thrive in the sun; entire business sectors orbit the sun.  Get some light shed on your brand by getting out there and finding some nice sun related promotional items!

Quite a few of the sunshine related promotional items you’ll come across are the kind with “SPF” protection ratings on them.   Catalogs are full of sunscreens created from just about any substance you could make lotions or sunscreens from.  Specifically, a sunscreen is made up of a mixture of chemical compounds that are there to stop the cancer causing UV rays.  There are organic chemical compounds that absorb harmful UV light and there are inorganic substances used; some sunscreens will be primarily organic while some use inorganic “particulates” that scatter and reflect the light.  Mixtures of organic and inorganic compounds are common, as well, meaning you can choose just any old lotion or try to stay organic or green with your selection.

It seems like this comes up in every article about promotions or using products to advertise but it really has to be repeated: make your promotions useful and unique.  Promotional sun lotions certainly fit the bill as useful.  At least as long as you maintain the “unique” part of the deal and are the only one giving our sunscreen at a particular event.  If there are other companies or people giving out free lotions, your promotions are just going to wind up as background noise.

How useful are a dozen bottle of lotions, at that point?  This makes the sunscreen a lot less unique and a lot less useful.  This isn’t to say sunscreen isn’t a good idea, but you’ve got to be one of the only people using it at a particular tradeshow or event.  As a corporate gift or company party giveaway, it would be a great idea.

What kind of unique sun related items are out there?  I would consider an umbrella as a start!  It doesn’t have to be a big heavy beach umbrella but can be a fairly inexpensive regular or small umbrella.  A beach umbrella might make sense as a corporate gift in some ways, but if you’re giving out some promotional items you will definitely want to go with something as cheap and as portable as an ordinary sun umbrella.

There are also other ways to give out some promotional shade instead of sunscreen, but your results may vary.  Sun shades for peoples’ cars are great in that they provide plenty of room for a large advertisement or company logo, but there’s also a chance they simply won’t be used.  How many people do you know that use one?  Visors and caps are nice because they’re portable, useful, and can be embroidered nicely, but this is another potential “noise to signal” problem if you’re handing them out at an event.  Caps and visors can be way too common at some trade shows and every other booth that is giving a cap out is just decreasing the likelihood that people will hold on to your item.

Just like any other approach to promotional items, you need something that will stand out and help you stand out with it.  Whether you’re giving out sunscreens or actual screens for sunny days, make sure it’s unique and useable so you’ll see clear skies ahead.
